Reaching New Heights: Partnering to Support Child Development

Tracking a child’s growth can be such a fun part of early parenting. Whether it’s marking the latest height on a wall or celebrating new developmental milestones, these moments remind us just how quickly children grow. To support families and partners across Washington in capturing these moments, Help Me Grow Washington (HMG WA) is excited to share a new resource: a beautifully designed, bilingual height chart created in partnership with the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (WCAAP).

Why We Created This Height Chart

Across the HMG WA network, partners expressed a need for more family‑friendly outreach materials that are not only helpful but also engaging and welcoming. Through funding available to support network-wide outreach, HMG WA saw an opportunity to create a tool that could spark joy and support children’s developmental health.

Recognizing the importance of pediatric expertise, and through our ongoing partnership, we teamed up with the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Their guidance helped ensure that the height chart reflects common developmental milestones while also offering simple, everyday ways parents and caregivers can encourage their child’s growth.

“There is always so much to talk about at well checks and it can be hard to talk about everything at every visit. I thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the topics that can come up during my conversations with families, especially about ways to help children have healthy bodies and emotions, learn well, and have healthy relationships with families and friends.” -Dr. Maithri Sarangam, a WCAAP member

Designing a Tool Families Can Enjoy

To turn this idea into something families would want to hang on their walls, we collaborated with a local graphic designer who brought the project to life with two fun and approachable themes:

  • A food theme: bright, playful, and perfect for kitchens or playrooms
  • A nature theme: calming, outdoorsy, and great for any space where families gather

We then worked with a local printer to produce high‑quality, durable charts that families can use for years.

What’s Inside the Height Chart

The new HMG WA height chart is designed with parents and caregivers in mind. It is:

  • Created for children ages 2 months to 5 years
  • Double‑sided with English on one side and Spanish on the other
  • Organized by milestone ages, with guidance on:
  • What your child may be doing at a certain age
  • Tips for supporting growth and learning
  • When to check in during well‑child visits
  • Where to reach out if questions or concerns come up

We hope this height chart not only becomes a keepsake but also a trusted tool for families as they celebrate each new inch and milestone.

Encouraging Families Through Every Stage

Every child grows and develops at their own pace. As a parent or caregiver, you know your child best. The height chart includes reminders about recommended well‑child visits at the ages listed. These visits offer important opportunities to talk with a pediatrician about your child’s physical, mental, and social development.

We want families to feel empowered, supported, and confident as they navigate their child’s early years.
